The 10 Most Dependable Car Brands of 2026 According to J.D. Power
Looking for a car that won’t keep visiting the workshop once the warranty ends? The J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) is one of the best-known global benchmarks for that question, measuring the number of problems owners experience after three years of ownership. In its 2026 edition, released on February 12, 2026, Lexus came first for the fourth year in a row, while the industry average was 204 problems per 100 vehicles.
In this report we look at the 10 most dependable car brands of 2026 according to the study, what it means for buyers in Kuwait and the Gulf, and the models that won their segments.
How does J.D. Power measure dependability?
The study is based on a survey of 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles in the United States, carried out between December 2024 and November 2025. Results are expressed as problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), and the lower the number, the higher the dependability.

Nissan closed the top ten with 194. It remains one of the most visible brands in the Kuwaiti market, led by the Patrol.
Key findings: phones and software in the spotlight
- Infotainment is the most problematic category at 56.7 problems per 100 vehicles, and four of the five most common problems relate to connecting a phone to the car — led by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity for the third year running.
- Software updates: about 40% of owners received an update in the past year, but only 27% said it improved their vehicle.
- Powertrain: petrol vehicles recorded 198 problems per 100, hybrids 213, EVs 237 and plug-in hybrids 281.
What do these results mean for buyers in Kuwait and the Gulf?
The study is based on US vehicles and owners, and specifications and driving conditions can differ in the Gulf — especially with extreme heat and desert driving. The results are a useful general indicator of brand quality, but it is also worth checking the local dealer’s service record, warranty length, parts availability and resale value before deciding.
