McLaren Announces New Series Supercar Coming in 2027: McL 820
McLaren today announced the McL 820, the next McLaren series supercar, which is coming in 2027. The announcement on Friday, 30 October 2026, also introduces an all-new naming structure for the British brand’s cars.
The Kiwi Returns in Central London
To mark the announcement, McLaren unveiled a kiwi bird statue in central London, wrapped in orange and black camouflage bearing the new name, and mounted on a plinth carrying the McLaren logo.
First used by founder Bruce McLaren, a New Zealander, the kiwi represents a defining part of McLaren’s heritage. According to McLaren, it connects the brand with its beginnings, whilst looking confidently towards the future.
A New Naming Structure: McL Plus a Performance Number
The new naming structure combines the McL prefix, inspired by McLaren’s motorsport heritage, with a performance-driven numerical identifier. In the case of the McL 820, the number reflects the vehicle’s 820PS power output, equivalent to around 809 hp.
McLaren says the naming convention marks the next chapter in its evolution, creating a clearer and more consistent approach that unifies cars across McLaren Automotive and McLaren Racing. McLaren’s Formula 1 cars already carry the MCL prefix followed by a number.

A Transition in McLaren’s Line-Up
The announcement comes at a time of transition for McLaren’s range. The company recently opened final orders for the 750S supercar ahead of the end of its production in 2027, and earlier this year revealed the 788HS, with 788PS, as the final and most advanced version of the series that includes the 720S, 750S and 765LT. The McL 820 therefore looks set to be the next chapter in the brand’s supercar family, with a jump in power over previous models in this segment.
McLaren has not yet revealed details of the powertrain, design or pricing. Further details will be announced in 2027, news that McLaren fans in the Gulf, one of the brand’s key regions, will be watching closely.
Conclusion
With the McL 820, McLaren opens a new chapter, pairing a name rooted in racing with a number that sums up performance, and the kiwi emblem that takes the brand back to its beginnings with Bruce McLaren. The key date now is 2027, when the car will be revealed in full.
